My name is Amnon Shavit, I'm from Tel Aviv, Israel. I do not speak Occitan, but owing to my basic knowledge of French, Spanish (Castilian) and Portuguese, I manage to understand a certain portion of it (when written. I don't really know how it sounds).

As part of my study for a Master's degree in Geography, I'm currently researching Regional (as opposed to National) Identities of Europe, focusing on the use of web 2.0 applications, such as Wikipedia, as a means of promoting such identities.

I would like to gather some information regarding your language and the cultural identity related to it. Therefore I'd be grateful to anyone who can provide me with such information and discuss some ideas and issues openly. Please contact me, preferably in English, through my discussion page, or by email: amnon.shavit (at) gmail (dot) com. Needless to say, all communication is for academic purposes only. Bonjour. Question: quelle est-elle?

http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Proposals_for_closing_projects/Closure_of_Occitan_Wikibooks

The LocalisationUpdate extension has gone live

modificar

The LocalisationUpdate extension is now enabled for all Wikimedia projects. From now on new localisations that become available in SVN will become available to your project within 24 hours. Your localisations get into SVN from translatewiki.net typically within a day and at worst in two days. This is a huge improvement from the old practice where the localisations became available with new software. This could take weeks, even months.

The localisations done by our community at translatewiki.net are committed to SVN typically every day. When the system messages in English are the same as the local messages, they will now be inserted in a file and are available for use in all our projects in a timely manner

What this means for you

modificar

Local messages have an impact on the performance of our system. It is best when messages are as much as possible part of the system messages. In order to remove unnecessary duplication, all the messages that have a local localisation and are exactly the same as the system message will be removed. What we ask you to do is to compare and proof read the messages in translatewiki.net and the local messages. You can then either remove local messages when the translatewiki.net message is to be preferred or, you can update the message at translatewiki.net.

Messages that are specific to your project will have to stay as they are. You do want to check if the format and the variables of the message are still the same.

Why localise at translatewiki.net

modificar

When you localise at translatewiki.net, your messages will be used in all Wikimedia projects and eventually in all MediaWiki based projects. This is how we provide the standard support for your language. When messages change, at translatewiki.net you will be prompted to revisit your translations. Localising is more efficient because we have innovated the process to make you more efficient; there is text explaining about messages and we have applied AJAX technology to reduce the number of clicks you have to make.

Translatewiki.net update

modificar

How can we improve the usability for your language

modificar

We expect that with the implementation of LocalisationUpdate the usability of MediaWiki for your language will improve. We are now ready to look at other aspects of usability for your language as well. There are two questions we would like you to answer: Are there issues with the new functionality of the Usability Initiative Does MediaWiki support your language properly

The best way to answer the first question is to visit the translatewiki.net. Change the language to your language, select the “vector” skin and add the advanced tool bar in in the preferences and check out the new functionality. And make some changes in your user page. When there is a need to improve on the localisation, please make the necessary changess . It should update your localisation straight away. We would like you to report each issue individually at http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Usability_issues.

When there are problems with the support of MediaWiki for your language, we really want to know about this. It is best to report each issue separately. In this way there will be no large mass of issues to resolve but we can address each issue on its own. Consider issues with the display of characters, the presentation of your script, the position of the side bar, the combination of text with other languages, scripts. It is best to try this in an environment like the prototype wiki as it provides you with a clean, basic and up to date environment. The prototype wiki is available for five languages but you can select any of them, change the preferences to your language and test out MediaWiki for your language.

We would like you to report each issue individually at http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Language_issues. The issues you raise will all be assessed. It is important to keep each issue separate, because this will make it easier to understand the issues and find solutions.

Wiki Loves Monuments

modificar

Hola.

Esteu tots convidats a participar. --Millars (d) 28 febrièr de 2011 a 11.40 (UTC)[respon]

Occitan song, anyone know it? Chanson Occitan, quelqu'un qui le connait?

modificar

Good day, I don't speak Occitan so I'll type in English if that's okay; I'll do my best in French for the Occitans here who don't speak English so well. My grandfather was born in Nice/Nissa but then moved to Flanders, and when we were children he used to teach us this song in Occitan. I can remember some words, but I can't find the whole song (the name or the complete lyrics) on Google because I don't know how to spell it, I only remember the sounds. Does anyone know the complete text or where I can find it in the right ortography? Thanks in advance!!

* oc:Le Vernet (Alèir) {Found more than one link for wikipedia:oc}

Bonjour,

Language support group for Occitan

modificar

The Wikimedia Foundation has brought together a new team of developers who are dedicated to language support. This team is to support all the languages and consequently it is not realistic to expect that the team members can provide proper support for your language. It is for this reason that we are looking for volunteers who will make up a language support team.

This language support team will be asked to provide us with information about their language. Such information may need to be provided either to us or on a website that we will indicate to you. Another activity will be to test software that will likely have an effect on the running of the MediaWiki software. We are looking for people who clearly identify their ability. Formal knowledge is definitely appreciated.

As much of the activity will be concentrated on translatewiki.net, it will be a plus when team members know how to localise at translatewiki.net.

Noves ajudes de la Fundació Wikimedia

modificar

Vinga, ¿us hi animeu? --Dvdgmz (d) 8 agost de 2013 a 01.55 (UTC)[respon]

Pywikipedia is migrating to git

modificar

Hello, Sorry for English but It's very important for bot operators so I hope someone translates this. Pywikipedia is migrating to Git so after July 26, SVN checkouts won't be updated If you're using Pywikipedia you have to switch to git, otherwise you will use out-dated framework and your bot might not work properly. There is a manual for doing that and a blog post explaining about this change in non-technical language. If you have question feel free to ask in mw:Manual talk:Pywikipediabot/Gerrit, mailing list, or in the IRC channel. Best Amir (via Global message delivery). 23 julhet de 2013 a 13.38 (UTC)[respon]

VisualEditor and your Wikipedia

modificar

(Please translate this message)

Greetings,

The Wikimedia Foundation will soon turn on VisualEditor for all users, all the time on your Wikipedia. Right now your Wikipedia does not have any local documents on VisualEditor, and we hope that your community can change that.

Reminder: VisualEditor is coming to this wiki on 2014-01-13

modificar

Hello, everyone. Again, please excuse my use of English: I would be very grateful if you would translate this message so everyone can read it.

VisualEditor is coming to this project on Monday, 13 January 2014, probably around 1900 UTC. VisualEditor is software in development to allow people to edit pages in MediaWiki without needing to learn wikitext syntax (like typing [[ and ]] to link to another page). It is already in use on more than 100 Wikipedia projects (please see mw:Help:VisualEditor/FAQ for more information).

On January 13th, you will have a choice between using VisualEditor or the current wikitext editor. When you press "Edit", you will get the new VisualEditor software. To use the wikitext editor, you can press "Edit source". For more information about how to use VisualEditor, see mw:Help:VisualEditor/User guide.

We hope that this software will be useful to people in your community, and we really need your help to make it better! If you have time, please test VisualEditor now and let us know about any serious issues specific to this Wikipedia before the rollout. To test VisualEditor now, go to Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-betafeatures and select "VisualEditor". If you're willing and able, please report any issue in Bugzilla in the "VisualEditor" product. Alternatively, please explain the issue you found on the central feedback page on MediaWiki.org. If you notice major issues affecting this Wikipedia, please let us know directly. Please leave a note on my talk page or, if it’s an emergency, like an unexpected bug causing widespread issues, reach out to James Forrester, the Product Manager, at jforrester@wikimedia.org for immediate attention.

We also need help with translation, both of the pages about VisualEditor and of the user interface. See VisualEditor TranslationCentral for information on what needs to be translated.

  • To translate the user interface, you need an approved account at TranslateWiki. Then click here. This will give you a list of individual lines and paragraphs. The English original will be on one side, with the option to "edit" on the other. Pressing "edit" will open an edit window where you can work. According to the current statistics, the interface is currently 92% translated. And I know it was 0% only some days ago, so, great job - cc. Joan Francés B., Claudi :)
  • To translate the user guide, simply click here to start. If you want to help with translations and need help with it, please leave a message for me on my talk page. The translated (or mostly translated) user guide also needs to be copied over here, so editors here can find it.
  • There is still no presentation page for VE in this language. It is actually another very useful resource for Occitan editors, so if you want to create it, click here to start. When the translation is over, contents can be copied here at Wikipèdia:VisualEditor to replace the current page.

Thank you for your help, and happy editing! --Elitre (WMF) (d) 7 genièr de 2014 a 22.20 (UTC)[respon]

PS: The engineering department has already planned office hours in the next months to discuss VisualEditor. The first one will be held on January 15th, at 2300 UTC; the second will be held a week later, on January 22nd, at 2300 UTC. Please join as Product Manager James Forrester discusses VisualEditor and upcoming plans. Logs will be posted on Meta after each office hour completes. (If office hours are heavily attended, it can be difficult to get to all questions, but if you want to ask a question and cannot attend or do not speak English, please let us know your question here by the day before and a community liaison will present it among possible discussion topics).

Request for comment on Commons: Should Wikimedia support MP4 video?

modificar

I apologize for this message being only in English. Please translate it if needed to help your community.

The Wikimedia Foundation's multimedia team seeks community guidance on a proposal to support the MP4 video format. This digital video standard is used widely around the world to record, edit and watch videos on mobile phones, desktop computers and home video devices. It is also known as H.264/MPEG-4 or AVC.

Supporting the MP4 format would make it much easier for our users to view and contribute video on Wikipedia and Wikimedia projects -- and video files could be offered in dual formats on our sites, so we could continue to support current open formats (WebM and Ogg Theora).

However, MP4 is a patent-encumbered format, and using a proprietary format would be a departure from our current practice of only supporting open formats on our sites -- even though the licenses appear to have acceptable legal terms, with only a small fee required.

We would appreciate your guidance on whether or not to support MP4. Our Request for Comments presents views both in favor and against MP4 support, based on opinions we’ve heard in our discussions with community and team members.

Please join this RfC -- and share your advice.

All users are welcome to participate, whether you are active on Commons, Wikipedia, other Wikimedia project -- or any site that uses content from our free media repository.

You are also welcome to join tomorrow's Office hours chat on IRC, this Thursday, January 16, at 19:00 UTC, if you would like to discuss this project with our team and other community members.

We look forward to a constructive discussion with you, so we can make a more informed decision together on this important topic. Keegan (WMF) (talk) 16 genièr de 2014 a 06.47 (UTC)[respon]

Feedback request: VisualEditor special character inserter

modificar

A special character inserter tool is available in mw:VisualEditor now. If you have time, please give it a try and let developers know what you think.

The "insert" pulldown on the task bar of VisualEditor will lead you to the '⧼visualeditor-specialcharacterinspector-title⧽' tool.

This is the ⧼visualeditor-specialcharacterinspector-title⧽ inserter. Your feedback on this tool is particularly important.

The developers would appreciate it if you would leave them a message with your comments and the language(s) that you tested at the feedback thread on Mediawiki.org. It is really important that the developers hear from as many editors as possible. Thank you, Elitre (WMF) (d) 24 genièr de 2014 a 17.41 (UTC)[respon]

Upcoming office hours for VisualEditor

modificar

Hi guys,

I just wanted to let you know, so you could mark your calendars if interested, that there are two IRC office hours scheduled to discuss VisualEditor in February.

The first will be held on Saturday February 15 at 1700 UTC and the second will be held on Sunday February 16 at 00:00 UTC. (See Meta for time conversion links.)

Logs will be posted on meta after each office hour completes. You'll find them, along with logs for older office hours on the topic, in a category at Meta.

Please see the main page for office hours on Meta for more information on how to join in. Thanks, and have a nice week, --Elitre (WMF) (d) 10 febrièr de 2014 a 13.35 (UTC)[respon]

More special character inserter feedback needed

modificar
Hi all, this is a request for feedback on the special character inserter. James Forrester, the Product Manager, has some specific questions for you! Please translate this to make sure more people in this community understand it.

The feature will help people who do not have access to a good character inserter on their hardware to be able to insert special characters. What we have right now, as you know, is just a very basic tool. It can be customized at each Wikipedia by creating a local page (so that each project could have a local version with the characters it wants). But we want to think about ways it might be improved. For that, we'd appreciate your input. Please try out the character inserter and think about how it would best (or would not!) work for you.

The "insert" pulldown on the task bar of VisualEditor will lead you to the '⧼visualeditor-specialcharacterinspector-title⧽' tool.

This is the ⧼visualeditor-specialcharacterinspector-title⧽ inserter as it appears on many wikis. (Some may have customized it.) Your feedback on this tool is particularly important.

Issues you might consider:

  • Should we just show the entire set of characters provided in the WikiEditor toolbar in the wikitext editor?
    • If we do, will it be overwhelming? How will you find the character you want? What should we do for users without enough space to display it?
  • Should there be a "priority" section for the ~10 characters that are needed most often? Is it OK if you need an extra click to go beyond the limited set?
    • How should the sections be split up? Should they be nested? Ordered?
    • How should the sections be navigated? Should there be a drop-down? A nested menu?
  • Should the character inserter be statically available until dismissed? Should it hover near the mouse? Should it go away on every selection or 10 seconds after a selection with no subsequent ones?
  • The toolbar already has too many options – how do we simplify it?

But we are open to any thoughts on how the special character inserter can best be developed.

Please leave your feedback on the Mediawiki feedback page or, if you'd prefer, leave it here.

Thank you again for your work with VisualEditor and for any feedback you can provide! --Elitre (WMF) (d) 12 febrièr de 2014 a 14.52 (UTC)[respon]

Universal Language Selector will be enabled by default again on this wiki by 21 February 2014

modificar

On January 21 2014 the MediaWiki extension Universal Language Selector (ULS) was disabled on this wiki. A new preference was added for logged-in users to turn on ULS. This was done to prevent slow loading of pages due to ULS webfonts, a behaviour that had been observed by the Wikimedia Technical Operations team on some wikis.

We are now ready to enable ULS again. The temporary preference to enable ULS will be removed. A new checkbox has been added to the Language Panel to enable/disable font delivery. This will be unchecked by default for this wiki, but can be selected at any time by the users to enable webfonts. This is an interim solution while we improve the feature of webfonts delivery.

You can read the announcement and the development plan for more information. Apologies for writing this message only in English. Thank you. Runa

Proposed optional changes to Terms of Use amendment

modificar
Hello all, in response to some community comments in the discussion on the amendment to the Terms of Use on undisclosed paid editing, we have prepared two optional changes. Please read about these optional changes on Meta wiki and share your comments. If you can (and this is a non english project), please translate this announcement. Thanks! Changes to the default site typography coming soon

modificar

This week, the typography on Wikimedia sites will be updated for all readers and editors who use the default "Vector" skin. This change will involve new serif fonts for some headings, small tweaks to body content fonts, text size, text color, and spacing between elements. The schedule is:

  • April 1st: non-Wikipedia projects will see this change live
  • April 3rd: Wikipedias will see this change live

This change is very similar to the "Typography Update" Beta Feature that has been available on Wikimedia projects since November 2013. After several rounds of testing and with feedback from the community, this Beta Feature will be disabled and successful aspects enabled in the default site appearance. Users who are logged in may still choose to use another skin, or alter their personal CSS, if they prefer a different appearance. Local common CSS styles will also apply as normal, for issues with local styles and scripts that impact all users.

No one needs free knowledge in Esperanto

modificar

There is a current discussion on German Wikipedia on a decision of Asaf Bartov, Head of WMF Grants and Global South Partnerships, Wikimedia Foundation, who rejected a request for funding a proposal from wikipedians from eowiki one year ago with the explanation the existence, cultivation, and growth of the Esperanto Wikipedia does not advance our educational mission. No one needs free knowledge in Esperanto. On meta there has also started a discussion about that decision. --Holder (d) 5 mai de 2014 a 10.38 (UTC)[respon]

Important VisualEditor announcement

modificar
Please help translate this message in your language. Thanks :)

Hi, everybody. As liaisons are spreading out to work on other Wikimedia Foundation products and VisualEditor has been active for some time, we are planning to make a few changes to the way liaisons support VisualEditor.

  • We are publishing a global newsletter (in English). Sign up at Meta! The bulletin will include major announcements and updates, so that you will see fewer posts and translation requests by us on this page. We are going to deliver the next issue here as soon as it is available; to receive the following ones as well, please add this page or your talk page (or both) to the delivery list. You can even volunteer to translate the newsletter locally.
  • We encourage you to leave feedback about VisualEditor on the relevant page at mediawiki.org, because that's the place the whole liaison team is going to monitor for centralized feedback from most wikis. We always appreciate community members' assistance! If you see VE-related enquiries on your Wikipedia that you can answer or that you can translate and post to mediawiki.org, that would be great!
  • We invite you to discuss VisualEditor's recent development and plans ahead during the next office hour on Monday, May 19th at 18:00 UTC with James Forrester (Product Manager). If you are not able to attend but have a question for James, you can leave your question at mediawiki.org or on my talk page by the day before, and I will try to get a response. We plan to continue these monthly sessions as long as there is community interest.
  • We remind you that the current ways to reach the Community Liaisons are listed at our respective user pages, and that a talk page message is always welcome and a good way to get/keep in touch.
Thanks for your attention! --User:Elitre (WMF) 9 mai de 2014 a 15.12 (UTC)[respon]

VisualEditor global newsletter—May 2014

modificar

This is a one-time mailing to projects that may need this information. Future newsletters will be available as opt-in only. To receive future newsletters (about one per month), please add your page to the subscribers' list at m:VisualEditor/Newsletter. You're welcome to translate to your language.

Since the last newsletter, the VisualEditor team has mostly worked on the new citation tool, improving performance, reducing technical debt, and other infrastructure needs.

Did you know?

The cite menu offers quick access to up to five citation templates. If your wiki has enabled the "⧼visualeditor-toolbar-cite-label⧽" menu, press "⧼visualeditor-toolbar-cite-label⧽" and select the appropriate template from the menu.

Existing citations that use these templates can be edited either using the "⧼visualeditor-toolbar-cite-label⧽" tool or by selecting the reference and choosing the "⧼visualeditor-dialogbutton-reference-tooltip⧽" item in the "Inserir" menu.

Read the user guide for more information.

The biggest change in the last few weeks is the new citation template menu, labeled "⧼visualeditor-toolbar-cite-label⧽". The new citation menu offers a locally configurable list of citation templates on the main toolbar. It adds or opens references using the simplified template dialog that was deployed last month. This tool is in addition to the "⧼visualeditor-dialogbutton-reference-tooltip⧽" item in the "Inserir" menu, and it is not displayed unless it has been configured for that wiki. To enable this tool on your wiki, see the instructions at VisualEditor/Citation tool.

Eventually, the VisualEditor team plans to add autofill features for these citations. When this long-awaited feature is created, you could add an ISBN, URL, DOI or other identifier to the citation tool, and VisualEditor would automatically fill in as much information for that source as possible. The concept drawings can be seen at mw:VisualEditor/Design/Reference Dialog, and your ideas about making referencing quick and easy are still wanted.

  • There is a new Beta Feature for setting content language and direction. This allows editors who have opted in to use the "Lenga" tool in the "Inserir" menu to add HTML span tags that label text with the language and as being left-to-right (LTR) or right-to-left (RTL), like this: <span lang="en" dir="ltr">English</span>. This tool is most useful for pages whose text combines multiple languages with different directions, common on Right-to-Left wikis.
  • The tool for editing mathematics formulae in VisualEditor has been slightly updated and is now available to all users, as the "⧼math-visualeditor-mwmathinspector-title⧽" item in the "Inserir" menu. It uses LaTeX like in the wikitext editor.
  • The layout of template dialogs has been changed, putting the label above the field. Parameters are now called "fields", to avoid a technical term that many editors are unfamiliar with.
  • TemplateData has been expanded: You can now add "suggested" parameters in TemplateData, and VisualEditor will display them in the template dialogs like required ones. "Suggested" is recommended for parameters that are commonly used, but not actually required to make the template work. There is also a new type for TemplateData parameters: wiki-file-name, for file names. The template tool can now tell you if a parameter is marked as being obsolete.
  • Some templates that previously displayed strangely due to absolute CSS positioning hacks should now display correctly.
  • Several messages have changed: The notices shown when you save a page have been merged into those used in the wikitext editor, for consistency. The message shown when you "⧼visualeditor-toolbar-cancel⧽" out of an edit is clearer. The beta dialog notice, which is shown the first time you open VisualEditor, will be hidden for logged-in users via a user preference rather than a cookie. As a result of this change, the beta notice will show up one last time for all logged-in users on their next VisualEditor use after Thursday's upgrade.
  • Adding a category that is a redirect to another category prompts you to add the target category instead of the redirect.
  • In the "Supòrt" dialog, it is no longer possible to set a redundant border for thumbnail and framed images.
  • There is a new Template Documentation Editor for TemplateData. You can test it by editing a documentation subpage (not a template page) at Mediawiki.org: edit mw:Template:Sandbox/doc, and then click "Manage template documentation" above the wikitext edit box. If your community would like to use this TemplateData editor at your project, please contact product manager James Forrester or file an enhancement request in Bugzilla.
  • There have been multiple small changes to the appearance: External links are shown in the same light blue color as in MediaWiki. This is a lighter shade of blue than the internal links. The styling of the "Estil del tèxte" (character formatting) drop-down menu has been synchronized with the recent font changes to the Vector skin. VisualEditor dialogs, such as the "⧼visualeditor-toolbar-savedialog⧽" dialog, now use a "loading" animation of moving lines, rather than animated GIF images. Other changes were made to the appearance upon opening a page in VisualEditor which should make the transition between reading and editing be smoother.
  • The developers merged in many minor fixes and improvements to MediaWiki interface integration (e.g., edit notices), and made VisualEditor handle Education Program pages better.
  • At the request of the community, VisualEditor has been deployed to Commons as an opt-in. It is currently available by default for 161 Wikipedia language editions and by opt-in through Beta Features at all others, as well as on several non-Wikipedia sites.

Looking ahead: The toolbar from the PageTriage extension will no longer be visible inside VisualEditor. More buttons and icons will be accessible from the keyboard. The "Acorchis de clavièr" link will be moved out of the "Opcions de pagina" menu, into the "Ajuda" menu. Support for upright image sizes (preferred for accessibility) and inline images is being developed. You will be able to see the Table of Contents while editing. Looking further out, the developers are also working on support for viewing and editing hidden HTML comments. VisualEditor will be available to all users on mobile devices and tablet computers. It will be possible to upload images to Commons from inside VisualEditor.

If you have questions or suggestions for future improvements, or if you encounter problems, please let everyone know by posting a note at mw:VisualEditor/Feedback or by joining the office hours on Thursday, 19 June 2014 at 10:00 UTC. If you'd like to get this newsletter on your own page (about once a month), please subscribe at w:en:Wikipedia:VisualEditor/Newsletter for English Wikipedia only or at Meta for any project.
