R.E.M. foguèt un grop estatsunidenc de rock format a Athens (Georgia, Estats Units) en 1980 per Michael Stipe (cantaire), Peter Buck (guitarra), Mike Mills (baissa electrica), e Bill Berry (batariá e percussion). R.E.M. foguèt un dels primièrs gropes de rock alternatiu populars. R.E.M. lancèt son primièr single, Radio Free Europe en 1981 amb lo labèl independent Hib-Tone. Lo single seguent foguèt l'EP Chronic Town en 1982, e tanben foguèt lo primièr single del grop amb I.R.S. Records. En 1983, lo grop sortiguèt son album, Murmur, amb fòrça bonas criticas. En 1987 lo grop sortiguèt lo single "The One I Love".
Al començament dels ans 90, quora lo rock alternatiu començava d'èstre popular, R.E.M. èra considerat coma un dels pionièrs del genre sortiguèt dos dels albums mai importants del grop, Out of Time (1991) e Automatic for the People (1992). En 1997 Bill Berry daissèt lo grop, mentre que Buck, Mills e Stipe contunhèron. En 2007, lo grop dintrèt al Salon de la Fama del Rock and Roll. R.E.M. se dissolguèt en 2011, lo 21 de setembre lo grop anoncièt la ruptura de son site web.
